First Impressions
The beginning of Book One starts a bit slowly, not in a boring way, but in a “the author is building something” way. We’re dropped into the edge of the Darkwood, a forest whispered about in fear, where magic is outlawed and superstition rules the townspeople. The world-building is atmospheric and deliberate, and once the pieces click into place, the story takes off.
The trilogy’s strength is how it layers tension: the forest feels alive, the politics feel dangerous, and the characters feel like they’re carrying secrets they’re not ready to share.

Our Heroine
Our protagonist, Rose, begins the series as someone who has been underestimated her entire life. She’s quiet, observant, and more comfortable blending into the background than stepping into the spotlight. But when she’s forced into the Darkwood under dire circumstances, she discovers abilities she never knew she had — abilities that could either save her world or destroy it.
Her journey is compelling because she’s not fearless or invincible. She’s thoughtful, anxious, and deeply human. Watching her grow into her power is one of the most rewarding parts of the trilogy.

Magic, Mystery, and the Darkwood Itself
The Darkwood is practically a character of its own — full of creatures, illusions, and ancient magic that doesn’t care about human rules. Each book reveals more about its origins, its guardians, and the truth behind the legends that shaped Rose’s world.
There are hints of rebellion, long-buried secrets, and a history that has been rewritten by those in power. The mystery unfolds slowly but satisfyingly, with each book raising the stakes.

Romance & Spice
If you’re looking for heavy spice, this trilogy isn’t that kind of story — and honestly, it doesn’t need to be. The most that happens on the page is a kiss here and there, and even those moments are gentle, brief, and emotionally driven. Rose spends far more time thinking about her feelings than acting on them, which fits the tone of the world and her character.
The romance leans heavily into longing, loyalty, and emotional connection rather than physical intimacy. It’s a slow, sweet burn built on trust, shared danger, and the kind of quiet devotion that grows over time. Readers who prefer low‑spice fantasy will feel right at home, and those who enjoy romance as a subplot will still appreciate the tenderness woven throughout.

Action & Adventure
The trilogy includes:

  • Forest chases
  • Magical battles
  • Political confrontations
  • High-stakes escapes
  • Moments where you genuinely don’t know who will survive
The action scenes are vivid without being confusing, and the emotional stakes stay high throughout.

Audiobook Experience
There’s only one audiobook edition of the trilogy, and the narrator delivers an excellent performance. Their voice work captures the eerie, enchanted tone of the Darkwood perfectly — from the tension in the forest to the emotional undercurrents between characters. The pacing is smooth, the character voices are distinct without feeling exaggerated, and the narration adds an extra layer of atmosphere that enhances the story. If you enjoy immersing yourself in fantasy worlds through audio, this is a great way to experience the series.

I enjoyed that the trilogy is one audiobook and could go right into the next book.

Final Thoughts

The Darkwood Trilogy has a little bit of everything:

✨ Adventure✨ romance✨ fantasy✨ mystery✨ political intrigue✨ emotional depth

It’s not just a story about magic — it’s a story about truth, identity, and reclaiming power in a world built on fear. If you love morally gray characters, atmospheric settings, and heroines who rise above their limitations, this trilogy deserves a spot on your shelf.

I really enjoyed this trilogy. Full of magic, mystery, family drama, and a little court politics, it kept me reading. It’s an expanded telling of the fairy tale Snow White and Rose Red, set in a complex world with rules of its own. I don’t feel like I can say much more without giving too much away, but for all her flaws, Rose is a compelling heroine intent on choosing her own fate.

White as Frost, by Anthea Sharp, is the first installment in her Darkwood Trilogy. This story takes us on a wild ride through her teenage years as Rose undergoes many changes and faces many unique challenges. She must learn to adapt to life in the castle as a princess, attempt to establish a relationship with her new stepsister, Neeve, and grasp her newfound knowledge that magic exists as does a whole new world. Rose navigates these challenges with poise, maturity appropriate for her age and grace as she learns the way of court living, slowly bonds with Neeve and others and learns to keep secret her place amongst the elves.

Black as Night is the second book in the world of the Darkwood Trilogy by Anthea Sharp. Rose continues to fight to control her fire magic, although the time spent with the red priests did give her some insight. Now she must focus on helping her sister, Neeve, plan her wedding. This edition is full of action and adventure, guaranteed to keep you on your toes while you read/listen. The audio version is very good, enjoyable to listen to and easy to understand.

Red as Flame is the exciting finale in Anthea Sharp’s fantasy world the Darkwood Trilogy. During Neeve’s wedding the worst has occurred. Raine is under attack by the Red Priests. Rose knows that this is at least partially her fault, that they are there for her. Much action and adventure follows as Raine fights for it’s freedom and Rose fights for her life. The audio version is good. It is well dictated, making listening enjoyable and easy to understand.

I definitely recommend this trilogy either in book form or as an audiobook. It’s a great fantasy world to escape to when real life is too much.
